![]() ![]() He was united in marriage April 15, 1855, near Adel to Miss Chlo Leaming and their married life, extending over 55 years, has been one of bliss and happiness, marred only when, 28 years ago, they stood with grief laden hearts beside the open grave of their little six year-old daughter, as they tenderly laid her to rest in the Myers cemetery. He was born in Indiana and lived there until twenty years old, when he came west, locating in this part of Iowa. He lived in this section so long was a man of such upright character and principle that the long acquaintanceship had ripened into regard and sincere affection in the hearts of the old settlers, and they will mourn his passing as they would a brother.Īlthough 78 years of age he was still hale and hearty when he came here on a visit a few months ago and many remarked at his excellent appearance. The news of his death came as a shock to the members of the family and friends who reside in this section, although word that he was gradually growing weaker had been written and the reports of his condition contained no note of encouragement. Word was received in Minburn Monday of the death of John Bryant at his home in Alpena, S. His obituary in the Minburn paper reads as follows: ![]() John's obituary gives the date as April 15, but the record of marriages in the Iowa state library cites the date as March 27. Chloe, the daughter of Judah Leaming and Rosanna Shippee, was born Jin LaPorte County, Indiana, and died Maat Alpena where she is buried. ![]() He was 20 years old when the family moved to Iowa from Park County, Indiana. He died on Octonear Alpena, South Dakota and was buried in the Alpena Cemetery. I hate to admit that she hated it, especially the snake that made his home in the outside shower stall.John was born on in either Lawrence County or LaPorte County, Indiana. I tried this with my daughter by sending her one summer to Camp Winataska in the 1970’s. Camp Winnataska, Pell City, AlabamaĮvery kid should experience a summer camp, I thought. Sometimes the parent is involved in these weekly camps such as those provided by universities such as basket ball and soccer camps. At these camps the boys and girls attempt to improve their individual skill in their sport. Sports camps are now the “in thing” for kids to attend. This also provided experience for kids involved in the production, stage setups and lighting activities at these events. This provided the opportunity for those kids to develop their singing or musical instrument talents. Other trips would involve a kid’s choir group going for a week to entertain school groups and mingling with other kids from different backgrounds. ![]() The kids spent time preparing to go on these mission trips by attending weekly meetings where they studied and planned for the upcoming trip. Some churches helped the kids plan outside vacation bible schools in poor economic area of the southeast. Some kids traveled to Louisiana for a week to do relief work for the victims of Katrina. This planned activity benefits the kids as well as the receivers of the services.Ī church camp leader coordinates such activities as raking yards, working in soup kitchens, or helping distribute food. Kids are encouraged to participate in activities that involve their age group in productive work. Today, summer camps have changed dramatically. On top of that, girls had to wear one piece bathing suits and rubber swim caps! Wearing shorts for girls was forbidden! Separate times were designated for girls to swim and boys to swim. boys and girls could not swim at the same time in the pool. Shocco Springs CampĪt Shocco Springs there were some rules governing swimming that seems strange by today’s standard…. Evening time was for devotions singing or planned play activity. Afternoons were spent swimming or hiking. Mornings in the camp schedule were spent in bible study or crafts. Later, as a teenager I went to camp in the summer on the campus of Judson College in Marion, Alabama and to Ridgecrest, a Baptist Camp in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee. Going to church camp was a happy event for me as a child in Childersburg during the WWII years. These yearly summer camp trips were made to Camp Mac and Shocco Springs located on Cheaha Mountain near the Talladega National Forest. My summer camp experiences seem like yesterday.
